Have you heard of these Unique Rhode Island Foods?
Here are 8 Rhode Island foods that locals love and you should definitely try:
I took a food tour around Rhode Island with the queen Laura (@bunsandbites), she took me on a tour to try these iconic and unique Rhode Island foods.
1. Bakery Pizza (aka Strip Pizza)
Not your typical slice. This is room-temperature, focaccia-style bread topped with a tangy tomato sauce—no cheese in sight. It’s sold by the slab, wrapped in wax paper, and often found at Italian bakeries or family parties. We went to Lasalle, we stopped by at noon on a Thursday and they were sold out already! Its a R.I staple.
2. Coffee Milk
The official state drink! Think chocolate milk, but swap in sweet coffee syrup.
3. Hot Wieners (not to be confused with hot dogs)
Served “all the way” with mustard, meat sauce, chopped onions, and celery salt on a steamed bun. These mini dogs have their own language and culture.
4. Awful Awful
Short for “Awful Big, Awful Good,” this drinkable dessert is a thin, creamy milkshake made with ice milk (not ice cream) that’s been around since the 1940s. Originally from Newport Creamery, it’s a regional icon. I loved that it was a lighter drink because that meant I could have more of it than I would a regular milkshake. You can pick from a list of flavors. A great sweet treat!
5. Stuffies
Large quahog clams, chopped up and baked with seasoned breadcrumbs, peppers, onions, and sometimes linguica (Portuguese sausage). Served in the clam shell. They're rich and savory and best from Iggys.
6. Doughboys
RI’s take on fried dough—these pillowy pieces of deep-fried dough are dusted with powdered sugar or cinnamon. They're a summer staple at beachside clam shacks.
7. Rhode Island-Style Chowder
Forget cream or tomatoes—this version is clear-broth. Light, briny, and loaded with chopped clams and potatoes.
8. Frozen Lemonade from Mr. Lemon
While Del’s gets most of the press, locals will point you toward Mr. Lemon in Providence. This frozen lemonade is smoother, almost Italian ice-like, and comes in rotating seasonal flavors—but the original lemon is unmatched.
